Back/forward buttons may be intercepted by the browser or operating system. An unobserved button is not proof of a broken switch. Button names follow browser mappings and may differ if you remap controls.

What your result means

No relevant input captured yet.

This illustration represents five standard browser button mappings. Extra buttons and remapped controls may not be exposed to web pages.

A trackpad can produce similar browser events. This site cannot identify your device or certify hardware condition.

01 / How to test

Start, then press and release each button inside the area.

  1. Start and hold the pointer over the testing area.
  2. Press and release left, middle and right. Try back and forward if available, then scroll up and down.
  3. Compare the counters and pressed states with your actions. Reset to repeat.

02 / If something seems off

If something seems off

  • If a button is not observed, check whether your mouse actually has it.
  • Review remapping and browser navigation behavior.
  • Try a different browser or computer before drawing a hardware conclusion.
THE FIELD GUIDE

Test every mouse button online

Check that left, right and middle clicks register, and see whether your side buttons reach the browser at all. The mouse illustration lights up each button as you press it and counts presses, so you can match what you did with what the browser received.

Press and release every button more than once, because a worn switch often fails only some of the time. Reset and repeat to compare.

Check each physical button fairly

Follow the same routine each time for a fair comparison.

  1. 01

    Identify your mouse layout

A standard mouse has left, right and wheel-click buttons. Side buttons are optional, so test only those physically present.

  2. 02

    Press and release separately

Use a deliberate press, release fully and repeat. The visual state and counter should respond to each action.

  3. 03

    Check combinations last

If a button fails alone, record that first. Then check mappings or another computer to avoid confusing software and hardware.

02

What each button should do

01Left and right
Should light up on every single press. A miss, or a press that counts twice, is worth repeating before you draw conclusions.
02Middle (wheel click)
Pressing the wheel counts as the middle button. If it never registers but the wheel still scrolls, the switch under the wheel may be worn or remapped.
03Back and forward
Side buttons appear when both the mouse and its software expose them to web pages. Many mice route them through driver software instead.
04Pressed state
A button that stays pressed after you let go suggests a stuck switch or a missed release. Reset and try again.

Button test outcomes

Use these patterns as clues, not automatic hardware verdicts.

SIGNAL 01

A physical button stays inactive

The browser did not receive the expected event, but mapping or device support may be the cause.

Try nextCheck manufacturer software and repeat in another browser or computer.
SIGNAL 02

A button remains pressed

A release event may have been missed, or the switch may be stuck.

Try nextRelease every button, click again and reset before concluding.
SIGNAL 03

DPI or macro buttons never light up

Special controls often change hardware settings or send remapped keys rather than standard mouse events.

Try nextCheck them in the manufacturer utility, not the standard button test.
04

If a button does not register

  • Check the button assignments in the mouse’s own software.
  • Try another USB port or another computer to rule out system-level remapping.
  • Look for a stuck or sunken button and clean around it carefully.
  • Test wired, or with fresh batteries if the mouse is wireless.

Mouse button questions

01How do I test if my mouse buttons are working?

Start the test, press and release left, right and middle, then try each side button. Every press should appear on the illustration and add to its counter.

02Why is my left mouse button not working?

Run the test to see whether the click reaches the browser. If it does not, check remapping and software first, then try another computer. If it fails everywhere, the switch is probably worn and the manufacturer may repair or replace it under warranty.

03Why does my middle click not work?

The middle button is the wheel press. Driver software can disable or reassign it, and a worn switch can stop registering while scrolling still works.

04What is the DPI button on a mouse?

It cycles the sensor through preset sensitivity levels. It usually does not send a normal click to the browser, so it will not light up here. The DPI page helps you compare effective pointer sensitivity.
