Separate cursor lag, stutter and jumping
A lagging cursor follows your hand late; a stuttering cursor moves in uneven bursts; a jumping pointer lands away from the intended path. These symptoms can have different causes even when they feel similar. Test movement on the desktop, then in an application, then inside the browser test. If one browser tab is sluggish but desktop movement is smooth, investigate browser performance before replacing the mouse. Avoid concluding that any visual hesitation proves sensor failure.
- Describe delay, repeated pauses or sudden jumps separately.
- Try the same gentle movement outside the browser.
- Check whether a game or high-load application is the only affected place.
Rule out common wireless interruptions
Check battery charge and the device power switch. Move a USB receiver into a clearer position and avoid crowded metal enclosures or obstructed ports; distance and nearby radio equipment may matter. Bluetooth can behave differently from a dedicated receiver. Confirm whether the mouse uses Bluetooth or its own dongle before changing pairing. A mouse that disconnects completely should follow the wireless-connection troubleshooting path rather than a polling-rate comparison alone.
- Bring the receiver closer while keeping the same movement.
- Charge the mouse or replace compatible batteries.
- Compare wired operation only when your model supports it.
Check the sensor's working surface
Highly reflective glass, glossy surfaces, dust, uneven fabric or a damaged mouse mat can make optical tracking unreliable on some devices. Clean the external sensor window gently using manufacturer instructions and use a stable opaque mouse pad for a comparison. Avoid touching or opening the optical module. If a repeated path becomes smoother on a different surface, that is useful evidence about operating conditions, although it does not identify a specific sensor defect.
- Keep the same hand movement and speed for comparisons.
- Try a clean, ordinary mouse pad instead of glass.
- Check the underside for trapped debris without disassembling the device.
Review computer performance and pointer settings
Heavy background work, stalled applications or temporary Bluetooth service problems may delay pointer feedback. Check whether the whole system is unresponsive using the keyboard, then close an overloaded application and compare. In Windows, Mouse settings offer pointer speed and additional precision options. On macOS, Mouse settings include tracking speed and pointer acceleration. A changed sensitivity curve can feel like lag even when the mouse reports input promptly, so note your old settings before experimenting.
- Compare after closing one demanding application.
- Keep operating-system and official device software current.
- Change tracking speed or acceleration only as a controlled experiment.
What browser event-rate observations can and cannot show
The polling page counts browser-visible movement samples and estimates their timing while you move. It is not a measurement of end-to-end cursor latency, display response, USB packet rate or radio performance. Browser event coalescing, tabs, system load and the way you move can affect the reading. A lower observed average by itself does not explain why a pointer stutters. Compare repeated runs under the same conditions alongside visible behavior, not one isolated Hz number.
- Run the ten-second event test with continuous movement.
- Compare sample count, duration and conditions together.
- Never assume a low browser value proves a slow USB controller.
Build a useful comparison and decide next steps
Repeat a gentle path at the same speed on two surfaces, with another port or receiver location, or after closing one application. Record the condition and whether the desktop pointer, browser pointer and other input devices behave similarly. When lag survives a second computer and stable connection, manufacturer support is reasonable; if many devices lag together, prioritize system diagnostics instead. A reliable retest result is more useful than an unsupported 'healthy mouse' percentage.
- Compare only one variable per run.
- Test another pointing device if available.
- Escalate with observations, connection type, operating system and model.
