ONE PRESS / WHAT REGISTERED?
Unwanted mouse click test
Does one click register twice? Make 8 single-click attempts and see what reaches your browser.
One deliberate left click. Then hands off while we observe.
Ready · 1 / 8How to test a mouse that double-clicks on a single click
Use the mouse that shows the problem. Put the pointer in the test area, press the left button once and release it. Wait for Ready before trying again. Do not deliberately double-click or hold the button down. The check ends after eight attempts; you can finish early to review a shorter sample.
The page groups registrations until there has been 1.2 seconds without another press. This pause separates attempts; it is not your operating system’s double-click speed. A new registration during the pause restarts the observation window and remains in the same attempt.
What extra registrations mean
If you physically pressed once but an attempt shows two registrations, the browser received an additional left-button press. For example, eight one-press attempts producing nine registrations leave one extra to investigate. If you accidentally clicked again during the wait, repeat the check rather than treating that result as a fault.
Native double-clicks are counted only when the browser emits a double-click event. Pairs under 80 ms are a separate timing observation. Neither number proves switch chatter: intentional clicks, software mappings and hardware can produce similar input. This page cannot measure electrical switch bounce or USB latency.
Find the cause with one change at a time
- Repeat slowly. Compare the same mouse in another app to check whether the symptom is limited to one program.
- Check click macros, remapping utilities and accessibility settings. Note existing settings before temporarily changing them. Double-click speed changes recognition of two clicks; it does not remove an extra physical registration.
- For a wireless mouse, charge it or replace its battery and compare a stable receiver connection. For USB, try a direct port instead of a hub. Repeat after each change.
- Compare another mouse on this computer, then the affected mouse on another computer if available. A symptom that follows the mouse is more reason to contact its support; it still does not identify the failed component.
What this short check can miss
Intermittent problems may not occur in eight attempts. Input outside the pad, blocked events and problems inside other apps are not captured. A trackpad or remapped device can produce mouse-like events; use your physical mouse for a meaningful comparison. Switching tabs while observing ends the check as interrupted. Results stay in this page’s memory and disappear on reset or reload.
Avoid opening the mouse or applying liquids based only on a browser result. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and check warranty terms before considering repairs.
